ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS: 12
South River's Mary Kay Harris was the only girls winner not from Severna Park, as she took the 100 freestyle in 54.96 seconds.
Justin Vagts broke the county mark in the 500-yard freestyle and nearly set two other records in leading the South River boys.
"It's great," South River coach John Wagner said. "We have six senior boys that this is their second title. To get it back before they graduate is wonderful."
Vagts' time of 4:43.06 in the 500 was 12 seconds off his personal best, but it was .65 seconds better than the county record set in 2007 by Annapolis' Charlie Melesh.
"It's awesome," Vagts said. "We all worked out butts off, and we had some really nice swims. Hopefully in March I can go out again and go under 4:30."
On the boys side, Severna Park freshman Matt McKenney set county records with his winning times in the 200 individual medley (2:00.35) and 100 butterfly (53.77).
"Given the kids in these other clubs, with (Doug) McWhorter at Broadneck and Vagts at South River, there's some strong competition," McTammany said. "For him to get out there as a freshman and do pretty well like he did, I'm proud of him."
Severna Park's Colin Heil set the county standard in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 56.17 seconds.
McWhorter turned in a county record in the 100 freestyle (49.26) in addition to swimming a leg on the record-setting 200 medley (1:45.46) and 400 freestyle (3:23.49) relay teams.
Taylor Smith, who also swam on both winning relays for Broadneck, set the county mark in the 100 breast stroke (1:04.12).
Old Mill's Jon Reddick captured the 50 freestyle title in 22.67 seconds, missing out on the county record by .02 seconds.
