Seahawks Continue on in Day Two of County Championships

Game Date
May 11, 2011

Day two was kind again to South River as the Seahawks lost only two entries from play and three players/teams qualified for the Regional Championships.  Five players/teams will continue on in the final day of the County Championships.

On a day of solid opponents ahead, 7th ranked Senior Ryan Fleming took on 2nd ranked Grant Hudson of Broadneck.  After an hour and a half of solid, back and forth tennis, it was Hudson who was victorious.  Fleming was relegated to the consolation draw where he met 6th seeded Paul Balleza of Severna Park, another tough loss for Fleming.  He will play for 7th place and the first alternate regional spot today.

In girls' singles, the number one overall seed Sophomore Xiaosong Shang plowed through the competition again.  She made quick work of #8 Erika Pokodner of Arundel, double bageling her in the quarterfinals, which qualified Shang for Regionals.  In the semifinals it was a rematch of Monday's tough win over #4 Zhao of Meade.  This contest was not nearly as close as Shang took it going away 6-0, 6-1.  Shang will play for the County Championship for the second year in a row today when she meets #3 Samantha Grim from Arundel.  Shang won their only meeting this season 6-4, 7-5.

In girls' doubles, the third seeded Sam Simmons and Mary Duggan took down #6 Wilson/Gayet of Severna Park in three sets in the Quarterfinals.  The 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win qualified Simmons and Duggan for Regionals and pushed the two forward into the semifinals where they will meet second seeded Naftali and Burt of Broadneck.  Naftali and Burt won the only meeting between the two this year 6-2, 6-4.

Also in girls' doubles, fifth seeded Sophomore Hannah Parks and Freshman Katie Simmons fell in straight set in the quarterfinals against the fourth seeded Trimpin sisters from Severna Park.  The two however rebounded quickly in their consolation match as they defeated 8th seeded Sherman and Doyle from Annapolis.  The win qualified the duo for Regionals and allows to play for 5th place today and a possible two team points for South River.

After receiving a bye, the fourth seeded senior duo of Liz Simmons and Sean Miller at mixed doubles had no answer for the upstart team from Southern, falling 4-6, 1-6.  The two will play Brennan and Koroma from Chesapeake today in their first match.  A win would qualify the two for Regionals and allow them to play for two possible team points.  Simmons and Miller won the earlier matchup this season 6-2, 6-1.

Four of the five playing today are playing for points to count toward the total to determine the County Champion after the completion of all matches today.  The final day gets underway at 3:00 p.m. at Annapolis High School.
