Seahawks slay the Knights to win the Maryland 4A East Regional, 5-2

Brody Raimondo went 4-4 at the plate as South River overcame a shaky start to secure a 5-2 victory over North County in seven innings at North County on Friday.

Brody lined an opposite field double in the second inning and singled in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, with a run scored and an RBI.  

South River's dominant hurler, Scott Mitchell, stayed steady and captained the Hawks through the turbulent first few innings, as North County scored two runs on two hits and an error in the first.  Then Mitchell, as he has so often this season, steadied the ship and waited for the potent Seahawks offense to get cranking, which it did, banging out 12 hits.  

Mitchell had nine K's on four walks over seven innings.  He also rifled a triple to left, roped a single and scored two.

The Hawks manufactured two runs in the decisive fifth, taking a 3-2 lead on a fielder's choice and a passed ball.  They pushed across one run in both the sixth and seventh to put the Knights on ice.  In the sixth, Gabe Vertucci singled scoring Brody Raimondo.  In the seventh, Brody topped a single up the middle that scored Mitchell.

Craig Sheridan had a hit and 2 RBIs, while Vertucci had two hits and a run scored.  Kyle Canavan had the other Hawk run.  Nick Raimondo, Austin Wright and Jake Gratz also had singles for South River.

The Hawks avenged an earlier loss to North County 1-0 to improve their record to 19-5 overall, and will play in the Maryland 4A State Semi-finals Tuesday at 4 PM at U of MD field.
