Seahawks slash Patriots 5-1 behind Sheridan, stellar defense, timely hitting

Craig Sheridan overcame injury and gutted out six innings on the mound as South River played flawless defense behind him to beat Old Mill 5-1 in seven innings at Old Mill.   

Brody Raimondo had two singles and scored twice, Scott Mitchell ripped an RBI single, and Jake Gratz executed a perfect squeeze bunt to pace the offense.  On defense, left fielder Connor Cox threw out Nestor Rentas at the plate in the bottom of the fifth, and Jake Gratz caught Brent Orbell drifting off third and nailed him in the bottom of the sixth as Old Mill was trying to mount a rally.  Kyle Canavan also made a number of excellent stops at third.

Sheridan, now 3-2 on the season, kept the Patriots off balance all game, allowing just one earned run, five hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings.  Nick Raimondo came on in the seventh and struck out two of the three batters he faced.  

Others with hits for the Hawks were Gabe Vertucci and Sheridan, while Mitchell also scored two runs.

The win puts the Hawks at 11-4 overall and sets the stage for the Friday night rematch vs. Arundel at Joe Cannon Stadium.
