South River Seahawks Varsity drubs Arundel, 11-1

South River (1-0) dominated Arundel (0-1) on Thursday, as the Seahawks broke through with 3 runs in the third and 4 in the fourth to win 11-1 in six innings at SRHS.

Craig Sheridan had the key hit in the third, blasting a double to right center and pushing across Gabe Vertucci and Scott Mitchell.  Austin Wright then followed with a sacrifice fly.  In the fourth, Nick Raimondo led off with a single and scored on a fielder’s choice, Vertucci walked and later came across on a Connor Cox rip to left.  Wright then lashed a single that produced another run.  Cox made it four in the inning as he sprinted home while Wright induced a rundown.

The Hawks put the game out of reach in the sixth on a two-run double by Mitchell, an RBI single by Wright, and the game ending RBI single by Jake Gratz.

Mitchell was nearly unhittable on the frigid day as he earned the win for South River.  He allowed one earned run, three hits, and no walks over six innings, while striking out eight.

Cox was a perfect 3-3 at the plate to pace the Seahawks.  He singled in the third, fourth, and sixth innings.  Vertucci walked three times in four plate appearances and scored three times.
